AVIATION MINISTERS MEETING SUCCESSFUL

St. John’s, Antigua – 6th April, 2005…….OECS Ministers of Civil Aviation on Friday last successfully completed their sixth meeting held at the Antigua and Barbuda Hospitality Training Institute at Dutchman’s Bay. The meeting which was chaired by the Hon. Harold Lovell, Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation, agreed on a number of matters pertinent to the Civil Aviation Industry.

In relation to the important matter of returning the region to category 1 status under the United States Federal Aviation Authority, the meeting noted that while substantial progress has been made by the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA), some OECS States were still to enact the necessary legislation and regulations. Additionally, substantial work still needs to be completed by OECS carriers.

The meeting urged that OECS governments and carriers take all measures to facilitate the reinstatement of Category 1 status by the third quarter of 2005. Antigua and Barbuda was the first OECS country to enact all of the necessary legislation and regulations.

The meeting also reviewed and endorsed the Work Programme and Budget for the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority for 2005/2006. This includes arrangements for the financing of the OECS representation at the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in Montreal.

OECS Civil Aviation Ministers are scheduled to meet in Montserrat in October 2006. (Ends)
